The importance of providing your staff with adequate training

You can almost hear the inward collective grown from staff when it’s announced that they are to undergo training to get up to speed with the latest technology of software being implemented. Training may not be everyone’s favourite thing to do but it’s vital to enhance skills and get everyone on the same page. If you’re about to make an investment in your business training should be a top priority.

The good news is that, for the most part, investment in training is taken very seriously both here in the UK and across the pond in America. According to survey by Training magazine, US companies spent a whopping $91 billion on staff training in 2017, which is around $1,000 for every staff member.

While some staff may complain that training takes time out of their working lives the UK L&D Report 2018 has shown that there are benefits. It revealed that 94% of the best performers surveyed said that learning and development is critical to success because it means they enjoy the lowest turnover in staff. What’s more, companies that spend over the national average of £300+ per employee each year have staff that stay with the business for more than six months and boast highly satisfied staff.

Training can be dull as dishwater, depending of course on who conducts it. If you haven’t had the best feedback when it comes to training, the L&D report also suggested several ways in which to engage with employees and to make learning fun. These include:

  • Conducting learning sessions outside of the office: Offer employees taster sessions of your virtual resources which can be accessed from anywhere – even at home.
  • Using gamification: Training sessions can be dull but there’s no reason why you can’t be playful. It suggests “Depending on your budget you can help employees study for a test in a digital game”.
  • Introducing competition: If you’re sending large groups for training try gamifying through an escape room where small teams compete against one another to answer questions to escape the room in the fastest time.
  • Making sure they’re heard: Allow your employees to show their feedback in the office. “It can be an empowering reminder that their development is a top priority for the organisation,” says the report.
  • Allow your employees to ask ‘stupid’ questions and giving them the platform in which to do so (discreetly): Some may say that there is no such thing as a stupid question. And you’d rather a staff member asks than to be too embarrassed to do so and get the task wrong. If you do, however, have some shy staffers then let them submit questions anonymously, suggests the report.
